Lions Club International History

Founded in Chicago Illinois, U.S.A. in 1917 by Melvin Jones, Lions International is now the largest active service club in the world. Membership is over 1.3 million with more than 45,000 clubs in 185 countries and geographic areas.

Lions clubs operate under the motto

“We Serve”

and our slogan

“Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nations Safety”

depicts the ideals we strive for.

The Lions emblem consists of a gold letter "L” on a circular purple field. This is framed in gold with two Lions profiles facing away from the centre. The words “LIONS” and “International” appear at the top and bottom. The lions heads represent our proud past and confident future.

Our colours are purple (loyalty and integrity) and gold (sincerity, liberality, purity, and generosity).

Lions Club International Objects

TO CREATE and foster a spirit of understanding among peoples of the world.

TO PROMOTE the principals of good government and good citizenship.

TO TAKE an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.

TO UNITE the clubs in the bond of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.

TO PROVIDE a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest, provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members.

TO ENCOURAGE service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavours.
